Scout Day at Sam
SHSU

Scout Day at Sam

Date: Saturday, February 20, 2010

Description: Scout Saturday at SAM is a one-day program where numerous merit badge classes are provided by Sam Houston State University and the George Strake District. A registered Boy Scout or Venturer, of any rank, with his Troop's permission may work on and possibly complete one or two of the merit badges that are offered.

Location: Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Directions and a campus map are available at http://www.shsu.edu/map/.

Cost: There is no cost for this event. Facilities are reserved and materials are prepared based on the number of Scouts registered so please be considerate of your fellow Scouts and be sure to attend if you have reserved a space in a class. Registration for Scouts in George Strake District opens at noon on January 19, 2010.  Registration for out of District Scouts begins the following week and all registrations close at noon on February 16, 2010.

Time: Check-In 7:30 AM, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Building; 1901 Avenue I; Huntsville, Texas 77340; http://www.shsu.edu/map/gmap_data/info.php?loc=hssbldg. All participants will gather in the CHSS Building for an introduction at 8:30 AM followed by dismissal to classes with instructors. Instruction starts at 9:00AM and depending upon the Merit Badge, will usually end some time between 1:00 and 4:00 PM. Be sure to bring a cell phone or money for a pay phone to call a parent when classes are finished. CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS. NO OTHER ELECTRONICS PERMITTED (MP3 players, Game devices, etc.) Scouts will report back to the CHSS Building when classes are finished to wait for pick up.

Uniform: Full Field Uniform, also referred to as Class A Uniforms, unless different requirements are identified for your merit badge class.

Lunch: You may bring a sack lunch or purchase a lunch ticket online for $7.50 for either a Burger King, Pizza Hut or Chick-fil-a lunch/drink combo from the Paw Print - campus food court in the Lowman Student Center (LSC).

Preparations: Many of the merit badges require some work to be completed in advance. A scout's advance work must be neat, complete, and brought to Advancement Day for the counselor to review. Poor efforts will be rejected!

Completion or Partial Credit Cards: Merit Badge Cards will be provided at the end of Advancement Day to show total or partial completion of all requirements. All registration is done on-line. Go to URL: https://ww2.shsu.edu/greg01wp/. Type it carefully. If you don’t already have an account set up, you will need to set one up, requires a separate email address for each participant. All participants must be pre-registered. There will be NO walk-ins. Please be considerate of your fellow Scouts - if you cannot attend, please return to the registration site and select "edit personal schedule" in order to remove yourself from classes and free the space for another Scout.

There are a few things we would like to review before you register.
· All merit badge perquisites are due at the beginning of class. If the perquisites are not completed before hand the scout will go home with an incomplete on the merit badge and must finish it with his troop.
· It is expected of the scout to participate in the class and behave in a scout-like manner, failure to do so will result in removal from the class or an incomplete on the merit badge.
· Remember most of the instructors are college professors and are not accustomed to being with as many youth in your age group. There will be an adult Scouter or Sam Student Facilitator (former scout) in each class to help monitor the class.
· Please register for a rank and age appropriate merit badge.
· Not all merit badges will be able to be completed in one day, please be aware of this.
By registering for a class on Scout Saturday you agree that you have read and will abide by the information above.

All off-campus classes are required to have a parent/guardian sign a medical release form and should bring their own lunch unless otherwise stated. If you plan to buy from Food Court, it is necessary for you to purchase online so they will have a count of participants for food preparation. Please note the change of meeting place. It is no longer the CJ Center. It is now College of Humanities and Social Sciences Building; 1901 Avenue I; Huntsville, Texas 77340; on most maps of the campus the building is still listed as A5.

Adult Training: There will be several training classes offered for adults.

There is still a need qualified counselor/instructors for:
1.  Citizenship in the Community – Conroe
2.  Citizenship in the Community – Montgomery
3.  Citizenship in the World
4.  Communications

If you’d like to volunteer to teach one of these classes, please contact Rick Hannah, Chairman – Boy Scout Saturday @ Sam at rhanna@rickhanna.com.
